What is a pumping station?

Packaged pumping stations provide an efficient and economical way of installing a drainage system that can be used to remove foul water, surface water and sewage in areas of low gravity or where connection to the main drain is difficult.

A Packaged Pumping Station is a mechanical device installed in a sewer, water system or other liquid-carrying pipeline to move a liquid to a higher level, usually consisting of one or more submersible pumps installed in a chamber, also known as sump pumps, sewage stations or pump chambers.

How does a Pumping Station work?

Sewer pipes generally rely on gravity to move waste water, allowing the fluid to flow slowly downhill until it reaches a low point, then pumping, or lift stations sited at the low point pump the waste water back uphill to a high point where gravity can once again take over the process.

Pumping stations are usually underground chambers that foul, surface water or sewage are discharged into, the fluid is then pumped through a discharge pipe to the main sewer.

Packaged pumping stations are normally manufactured from strong, impact-resistant polyethylene or GRP (glass-reinforced plastic). The pumping station is supplied with fitted internal pipework, ready for installation below ground, after which submersible pumps and control equipment are fitted.

Features may include controls for fully automatic operation; a high-level alarm that operates in the event of pump failure; and a guide-rail system, to permit easy removal of pumps for maintenance or repair.

Why choose us for Pumping stations?

Choosing a pumping station

At Automated Environmental Systems we have many years expertise in the supply and building of packaged pumping stations including large multi-chamber commercial, industrial, building and renovation projects.

Our smaller domestic pumping stations are normally available for immediate delivery, delivery times on larger GRP tanks vary according to the specification of the build.

Whether you require an ‘off-the-shelf’ solution, such as our popular mini drain and mini foul sewage pumping stations, or a bespoke single or dual pump system designed to suit your particular requirements, our pumping stations come in a range of sizes and options including guide rails, pump alarms, control equipment and discharge pipework.

Our standard tanks are manufactured from polyethylene which is extremely durable and offers good chemical and caustic resistance, being plastic the tanks are also corrosion resistant and installed correctly will offer many years of service.

For more specialist applications we can manufacture tanks from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastics), these tanks can be made to measure, and offer mechanical strength and additional thermal or chemical handling properties, dependent on requirements.

Regular servicing

We recommend that all pumping stations purchased from us are serviced regularly to ensure that all pumps, pipework, valves and control equipment are kept in full working order.

On a domestic pumping station a minimum of an annual service is recommended, on higher usage pumping stations a more frequent service arrangement may be advisable, please call us for details and a quote.

We have a network of fully qualified service engineers that can cover most areas of UK.

Home owner regulations

The Government has introduced new rules that simplify the way septic tanks and small sewage treatment plants are regulated in England, septic tanks and small pumping stations that connect to the mains sewer no longer need to be registered in order for a property to be sold.

However, owners of properties with septic tanks and small sewage treatment plants are still responsible for meeting ‘general binding rules‘; all private pumping stations and septic systems should be properly maintained and must not discharge into ground or surface water.
