Understanding COP: getting more from your energy

COP stands for Coefficient of Performance. Simply put, it is a ratio that tells you how much heat you return to your pool for every unit of electricity you pay for.

How it Works

If a heat pump has a COP of 5.0 it means: input 1kW of electricity, output 5kW of heat.

You are essentially getting 4kW of free heat extracted from the ambient air.

Why Air Temperature Matters

Heat pumps are aerothermal, meaning they pull heat from the surrounding air, because of this, the COP changes based on the weather.

Warm weather (e.g. >24°C), the air is full of heat energy, making it easy for the pump to achieve a high COP (like 5.0 or higher).

Cooler weather (e.g. <15°C), there is less heat available in the air. The pump has to work harder, which lowers the COP and reduces the total heat returned to your pool.

Expert Tip: When choosing a heat pump, don't just look at it's maximum COP, consider the air temperatures during your specific swimming season.

A pump that is powerful enough for July might struggle in May or September.

Please refer to our Heat Pump Sizing Guide to ensure you select the correct capacity for your pool size and desired swimming season.

Sizing

Learn more with our handy sizing guide, find out what kW heat pump you require for your pool or pond

Installation

If you are thinking of heating your pool you should cover the pool when not in use as 80% of heat loss occurs through surface evaporation, a separate solar or bubble cover is a worthwhile investment if you don’t have an existing cover.

With an above ground pool it is especially important to keep it covered as these pools are not well insulated against heat loss – additional insulation around the sides and bottom of an above-ground pool can help to retain valuable heat – in fact properly insulating your pool can extend your season or even reduce the size of heat pump required.

The Professional 8, 10 and 15 models come fitted with a 2.8m mains cable and UK plug as standard, making them suitable for RCD protected outdoor sockets, this cable can be removed and the unit can be hardwired if required.

The other heat pumps in the Professional range will require electrical installation by a qualified electrician, the use of a Miniature Circuit Breaker, slow type (C or D curve) is recommended. Full installation guidelines can be found in the user manual including the required cable size.

The electrical connection marked water pump should not to be used for connecting your pump if using a sand filter as flow protection on the heat pump will switch the power off preventing backwash operation (flow is reversed during backwashing).

Water inlet and outlet connections are 1½ inch / 50mm female glue sockets across the range, the supplied unions can accept optional hose tails for connecting 32mm or 38mm flexible hose.

If the flow rate through your heat pump is too high it can take longer to heat your pool or you may struggle to achieve your desired temperature, our bypass kit for above ground pools optimises the flow rate to maximise the heat transfer to your pool water. A bypass kit also allows the circulation and filtering of pool water without heating and for winterising your heat pump.

The Remora Professional features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity as standard (requires Wi-Fi network with suitable signal strength) and can be controlled from your smart device from anywhere in the world. The Smart Life App is available for both iOS and Android smart devices.

The Smart Life App can be used to view the current pool water temperature, adjust the desired temperature, switch between modes, set the timer, turn the heat pump on and off remotely and to view the operating status, energy logs and all parameters.

Inverter heat pumps use a variable speed compressor motor, the motor speeds up and slows down as needed to achieve and maintain the required temperature, the result is that the desired temperature will be reached more quickly and maintained more efficiently than a fixed speed motor.

Fixed speed motors reach the desired temperature more slowly as the output is fixed, once the temperature is reached they maintain the temperature by switching the motor on and off. By varying the output an inverter heat pump can speed up the time taken to achieve the initial temperature and thereafter maintain a constant temperature without the need to keep stopping and starting the compressor to control output.

Our range of Remora Professional pool heat pumps have an average C.O.P. of 17.55, meaning that for each kW of energy consumed up to 17.55kW of heat is transferred to your pool (dependent on both air and water temperature). Inverter technology avoids the power wastage of fixed speed motors, making an inverter heat pump more energy efficient and quieter to run.

Your Remora Professional swimming pool heat pump should always be installed outside, restrictions on air flow around a heat pump such as dense vegetation or solid surfaces such as sheds, fences or walls will lead to a drop in efficiency and heating ability, it especially important that cooled air can be properly dispersed away from the unit.

The manufacturer literature may state that the heat pump should be positioned above the waterline, the assumption being that pools are in-ground, therefore the heat pump would sit at ground level.

If you have an above-ground pool please position your heat pump at ground level (therefore below the waterline), there is no need to elevate the heat pump.

Heat pumps are designed for outside use, you do not need to service a heat pump unless there is a specific issue.

Heat pumps should be drained of all residual water using the drain plug before periods of inactivity, especially during cold weather to avoid freezing*. If your heat pump came with a Winter cover this should be used to stop dirt and debris collecting on the evaporator and in the fan opening.

It is recommended that you periodically use a heat pump cleaning spray to remove dirt from the evaporator fins, benefits include:

Removes grease, dirt and other debris

Low foaming, heavy duty formula

Better efficiency = lower energy consumption

Extends life of your heat pump

Spray on, leave 10 minutes and rinse off

Protects against corrosion

BUY Lo-chlor heat pump cleaner ☍

*Notice: The product warranty does not cover frost damage caused by a failure to drain the heat pump during periods of inactivity in cold weather, or while in winter storage.
