Understanding COP and SCOP

Understanding COP and SCOP

The new generation of Poolex heat pumps have SCOP ratings as well as the traditional COP ratings, but what is SCOP and how does it vary from COP?

The Coefficient of Performance (COP) measures the heating efficiency at a specific moment. It’s the ratio of the energy output to the energy input, essentially showing how much heat is produced per unit of energy consumed.

Most manufacturers typically quote the COP of air source heat pumps, however these values are based on specific air and water temperatures.

The heat pump’s COP will vary according to the actual water temperature, the rate of heat loss and importantly, outside temperature, COP decreases in colder conditions.

Whereas SCOP is the ratio of the total amount of heat delivered divided by the total amount of energy consumed over a period of time.

A SCOP rating accounts for temperature fluctuations, offering a comprehensive measure of annual energy performance.

The Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) provides a more realistic picture of a heat pump’s efficiency over an entire heating season.

The NEW Poolex Variline

The NEW Poolex Variline

The Variline from Poolex reduces energy consumption by automatically adjusting its flow rate according to your pool’s needs.

Your filter pump transfers water from your pool through the filter and your heat pump. However, output levels can vary depending on swimming periods and pool treatment.

Running a variable-speed pump at 50% for 24 hours instead of an on/off pump for 8 hours saves around 80% of the energy.

The NEW Variline features Wi-Fi capability, the Poolex App and Poolex Cloud allow for remote control and monitoring.

  • Ultra silent <45dB
At slow speeds, sound levels are divided by four compared to a constant speed pump
  • Better filtration
As water passes more slowly through the filter, filtering is improved and the filter does not become clogged as quickly
  • Connected Equipment
Intuitive use and remote control via the Poolex app. Maintenance and software updates are simplified through Poolex Cloud and OTA
  • Longer life
As the motor does not run continually at full capacity, there is less use, less heat and less wear on the pump
  • Programmable speeds
You can program up to four speeds from 450 to 3450 RPM based on your pool’s needs
  • Suitable for all pool sizes
Five models with a maximum useful power of 3hp and a maximum flow rate of up to 33m³/h (1.5hp curves below)

Remora Heat Pumps – Anti-Freeze Protection Logic – Winter Use

Remora Heat Pumps - Anti-Freeze Protection Logic - Winter Use

It’s that time of year when your Remora heat pump may need to use the built-in anti-freeze protection. We receive calls from customers asking what the message on the controllers of the F and I models means, our resident heat pump ‘guru’ and MD Simon has written this quick guide to understanding how the anti-freeze system works for the fixed speed and Inverter heat pumps.

The Remora F and I model heat pumps have two levels of anti-freeze protection.

The logic on each unit is slightly different, one being a fixed-speed unit and the other being an inverter.

The control logic for the fixed speed range is shown below: P17 Message on the controller

If the inlet water temperature is 4°C or below and the ambient temperature is 2°C or below, the unit will enter the 1st level of anti-freeze and start running the water pump to prevent water in the pipes from freezing. When the ambient temperature is above 4°C the heat pump will exit the anti-freeze mode.

If the inlet water temperature is 2°C or below and the ambient temperature is 2°C or below, the unit will enter the 2nd level of anti-freeze and start running the heat pump to heat the water. Once the inlet water temperature exceeds 3°C the heat pump will exit the anti-freeze mode.

However anti-freeze protections will still be triggered by water and ambient air temps.

The control logic for the Inverter range is shown below: EE04 Message on the controller

If the inlet water temperature is lower than 15°C and the ambient temperature is 0°C or below, the unit will enter the 1st level of anti-freeze, and start running the water pump. When the inlet water temperature exceeds 15°C or the ambient temperature is above 2°C, the heat pump will exit anti-freeze mode.

If the inlet water temperature is lower than 2°C and the ambient temperature is 0°C or below, the unit will enter the 2nd level of anti-freeze, and start running the heat pump to heat the water. Once the inlet water temperature exceeds 15°C or the ambient temperature is 2°C or above, the heat pump will exit anti-freeze mode.

However anti-freeze protections will still be triggered by water and ambient air temps.
